esc
‘Esc’ is a cabinet designed for children. Not visible from the outside, however in the cabinets drawer there takes place a children’s World. Here children can run wild with their imagination, creating their own story and space in a child-unfriendly interior world. This concept allows children to paint the cardboard mould, make their own puppets to eventually create a diorama. Move the slider to see a sunrise in the drawer, peek though the ‘door spy’ and let them ‘Esc’ in their very own play.
This inspiration was sourced from the objective to design to the theme ‘immigration’. Asylum centres are limited in their space to house whole families. Children have no place for their own, no place to ‘Esc’ in their own world. I placed myself in the shoes of a child and discovered lost, ‘out of sight’ surfaces. As a child I recall drawing underneath tables, chairs and… in drawers. This is something I wanted to captivate in my design. Although it is small, it is unconfined for an imaginative children’s mind. Let them ‘Esc’.
